My name is Jessica Wynne, and I am the new sustainability representative for HOEM. I will be heading into my third year of Environment and Urban Sustainability here at Ryerson in September, so I am very excited about this role and all the opportunities and events I have planned. Here are some fun facts about me!
- I am an avid dog lover; I have 3 labs back home and I dog walk/dog sit on basically a fulltime basis
- I hike and get outdoors as much as possible.
- I am a vegetarian for environmental and humanitarian reasons, and I am hoping to become vegan someday.
- I just got back from Yellowknife, and I am going to Guyana in August for the purpose of ecological restoration and community development.
My Purpose in Life
I have always been someone who tries to see the best in others and work towards a common goal of helping the future of our planet. I was born in 1999 in Stratford, and I clearly remember spending countless hours in the garden or at parks with my mom and Nana. I found comfort in being outdoors and pretending to be a nature goddess (or something along those lines; I was REALLY into Greek mythology and history as a child). Being outdoors distracted me from the bullying and loneliness which I felt on a daily basis at school. My purpose in life and with my career path is to ensure my future children can enjoy nature the same way I did.
I have always been someone who is passionate about the environment and an advocate for all which our planet provides. Heading into both my third-year of EUS and the latter half of 2019, I am even more aware of the urgency to help one another and future generations. It is estimated by the United Nations that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans, in addition to other planet-altering losses. The motivation to work towards making a difference in the planet is something I strive for on a daily basis and want to motivate others to do as well.
The preservation of nature has a big emotional and spiritual purpose. This is where my role with HOEM comes in. Not only will I work to better the environment of our neighbourhood (ex. community cleanups, attending rallies, field trips to gardens, etc.), but I will also focus on improving the connection HOMEies have with our environment. My goal is that these events and projects will reconnect our HOMEies with nature and the world around us!
I am really excited about this opportunity with HOEM and I can’t do it without all of you! Events and campaigns can only make a difference if I have participation and enthusiasm from HOEMies. If you have any recommendations or event ideas, I’d love to hear them. I look forward to working with all of you to make Toronto, and HOEM, a more sustainable and environmentally conscious place.
