Parents + Guardians
Safety + Security
HOEM places the highest priority on the safety and security of our student residents. While Toronto consistently scores high in safe city rankings, we have incorporated features and procedures designed to protect students and provide peace of mind – for residents and their loved ones. Only students and building staff have HOEM access, and this is enforced with 24/7 reception and overnight security. All guests visiting HOEM must be signed in with a resident and provide photo I.D. The main entrance and individual bedrooms have key card access and there is surveillance in all communal areas. HOEM has monitored fire alarms and sprinkler system throughout the entire building. An app is available to residents that fully outlines all safety guidelines for the building and in case of emergency, RAs, security and maintenance are on call 24/7.
When moving into residence, meeting new people and settling in is naturally a top priority for students. But we know the primary reason HOEM residents are here is to get an education, and that is reflected in the design of the building and the policies put into place. Academic excellence takes priority. No need to go to the library: HOEM features study space in each bedroom, study spaces on every floor, a multipurpose room on the second floor, meeting rooms with wirelessly connected TV and white-board and the Maker Space for physical projects.
Each student also has an Academic Link, an upper year student from their faculty who is there to answer any questions they may have about classes, enrollment or how to ace that final exam. The Academic Link lives on-site and is here to help connect residents with free academic support to learn effectively and efficiently, including the on-campus Ryerson Study Skills and Transition Support services. Residents can join discussion-based Supported Learning Groups to further build academic skills, be part of ‘The Long Night Against Procrastination’ all-night study event, sign up for workshops like ‘Achieving Focus and Concentration’ and access peer to peer services, tutoring, study hall hosted by peer academic coaches and more.
Move in Ready
HOEM’s apartments are ready to live in the moment students arrive. No need to buy furniture or connect appliances they’re all included. For a small fee, you can arrange to have crockery, cutlery, and bedding provided before you arrive (packages coming soon). Residents simply need to bring their personal items. This is not only great for residents, but also for the parents or guardians who would normally help with set up. This simplifies life for everybody involved: starting university is stressful enough without having to worry about furnishing and setting up a household. HOEM has all the resources students need to be happy and healthy (mentally and physically).
Included in the residence fees: Wifi, all furniture and appliances, all HOEM programming and staff support, Ryerson Residence Life services, in-suite common area cleaning (living room, kitchen, bathroom and corridors), cable TV in student lounges, automated package delivery system, and of course access to the entire HOEM facility (maker space, yoga studio, gym, lounges, meeting rooms, and multi-purpose room).
Optional Add-ons: TV in in-suite living room, in-suite Cable TV, parking, crockery and cutlery, bed sheet sets. Contact HOEM management for more information.
Not included: There is a laundrette on the ground floor exclusive to HOEM residents that is pay per use. There are also printers available throughout the building which are pay per use.
HOEM believes in openness and transparency – if you need more clarification around costs, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
HOEM Away from Home
HOEM fosters a feeling of community, with fellow residents and staff offering support and encouragement to each other. Research shows that students who develop a sense of community with their residence peers adjust better to university life, enjoy more academic success and are happier overall. HOEM provides residents with endless ways to get involved around the building, learn new skills, get support and interact with other residents.
HOEM provides a comfortable environment and a safe, secure living space within each suite. Individual-locking bedrooms are fitted with a desk, proper lighting for reading and studying, comfortable bed and storage space, including closet and drawers. The shared areas within the suite feature hardwood style floors throughout and are fully furnished, including sofa, dining area and fully-equipped kitchen (oh yes, that includes a dishwasher). Each HOEM suite is tastefully decorated and feels like a home, not a cookie-cutter dormitory. Residents have access
to great shopping facilities close by, but HOEM also has a number of on-site services including printing, coffee bar and more.
Choosing HOEM provides students with the best of both worlds: they live in a modern, upscale and safe building in the heart of Toronto that is also fully connected to campus and Ryerson Residence Life Services. The supportive environment cultivated at HOEM allows students to test out their independence with a built-in safety net of supportive fellow students, staff, amenities and services. This environment of support helps to provide students with the optimal tools and experiences to begin their professional careers with the greatest chance of success.
